Discover shibari with anatomie studio
“Discover Shibari” is our signature foundational Shibari course series for the last 10 years. The series is made of 4 courses that take you from complete beginner all the way to full suspensions and transitions. Courses are taught by top notch instructors in our team, many of whom teach and perform internationally. Our teaching style is practical and approachable, with an emphasis on human connection and play. We create an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, trying things out, and exploring techniques at their own pace. All our classes are taught from both the rigging and bottoming perspective with emphasis on collaboration and partnership. Our classes cater to all genders and relationship types. Whether you are in a romantic relationship looking to explore the more erotic aspects of rope, or are in a platonic partnership simply looking to l earn basic rope techniques, our classes have you covered.
The courses are generally limited to 12-14 couples and sell out well in advance so early booking is advisable. Most courses take place during a weekend (Saturday + Sunday) but occasionally also take place mid-week over 4-6 weekday evenings. If you are not quite ready for a long course, join on a Thursday for our beginner classes! Have questions? Check out our FAQs.
Course 1: Intro to shibari
Course 1 is the first in a four-part foundational series created by Anna Bones and Fred Hatt. Designed for complete beginners Course 1 covers the key techniques that underpin all rope work — from single and double column ties and basic frictioning to core ties such as the bunny ears, futomomo, and takate kote. Soft skills including rope bottoming, consent, communication, and building healthy rope relationships are woven throughout. We also cover in detail safety and risk so you leave empowered to make decisions about rope and kink together.
Course 2: Intro to floor ties
Course 2 builds on Course 1 to deepen knowledge of floor-based ties and shapes. It focuses on perfecting tension, placement, and finishing touches, while contextualising ties for partnered play. Content is tailored to the group and may include Takate Kote revision, Agura, tengu, arm and leg ties, bamboo ties, hog tie variations, hair and crotch ties, Hojo-jutsu style ties, tying to bedposts, and an intro to breath play.
Course 3: intro to partial suspensions
Course 3 focuses on partial suspensions, building on previous courses to explore structural harnesses, upline application, tensioning, and classic shibari shapes close to the floor. Key techniques include the structural third rope of the TK, mainline attachment, lock-offs, point height selection, and harnesses such as the futomomo and calf binder. The course also covers reading the body, partner communication, self-assessment, safe exits, pain processing, and bottoming for suspension.
Course 4: intro to full suspensions and transitions
Course 4, the final instalment of the foundational series, is an intensive weekend focused on full suspension and transitions. It covers: suspension line lock-off and management, intro to transitions, reading and communicating with your partner mid-air, additional harnesses, classic suspension positions, and transition techniques using carabiners, rings, and bamboo.
Not quite ready for a full course? Join our Thursday beginner classes. These are suitable for solo attendees and complete beginners. Although the Thursday classes are not progressive (meaning they are always aimed at complete beginners so they don’t build on each other), they are taught by a variety of teachers and the content changes week to week. You can easily join on multiple Thurdays and get something out of it.
Check out our Five Thursday passes if you plan on joining semi-regularly.
