FAQs

These are our most frequently asked questions. You'll find more answers and useful info in our Blog section.

Q: I'm curious where do I start learning shibari?

Start with a Thursday—these are our dedicated beginner evenings and provide a gentle entry into rope and the community. There is an introduction to the space and a taster class. From there you can book onto any class suitable to beginners such as any "Beginner+" class or Course 1. All the links to our events are on our ticketing site here.

Q: Can I come on my own or do I need to bring a partner?

On a Thursday you can come solo, with a partner, or as a small group—it's entirely up to you. About 20% of our attendees come alone on Thursdays, either to join the class or just make friends in the space. If you'd rather watch from the upstairs lounge or browse our books, that's completely fine too. We've got free tea and coffee in the kitchen area.

Most workshops are partnered, so unless otherwise stated on the event listing, you will need to come along with someone.

Q: I prefer getting tied to tying, how do I find a rigger?

Join us on Thursdays for our beginners’ Rope Jam where you can pair up with others wanting to learn to tie. You can also join our Discord server and use the “Find Rope Partners” channel to find people/riggers. Please note that there are usually always more people people wanting to get tied than there are skilled riggers, read this for some tips!

Q: I'm nervous about coming on my own to a Thursday, what advice can you offer?

We get it. Here is what you can expect: the atmosphere is warm, and jams usually kick off with everyone sitting around chatting over tea or coffee. Think of it like going to a dance class—welcoming space, plenty of room to socialise. You might not find a tying partner on your first visit, but you'll probably make friends, see some great rope work, and pick up new skills. Jump in, say hi, ask questions. More advice for beginners and how to make friends over here.

Q: If I come on my own to a rope jam, will I definitely find someone to tie with?

It's not guaranteed, but possible. Our space gives you the chance to socialise and meet like-minded people, but we don't actively pair anyone up. We might help break the ice on a Thursday beginners' evenings—but the rest is up to you. If you're specifically looking to make tying connections, check out our Social Mixers or "Spontaneous" Jams. These structured events are designed to help people form friendships and partnerships. See our box office for the next one.

Q: What should I wear for a rope jam?

Whatever feels comfortable. Most people show up in street clothes or change into yoga/dance wear. Keep in mind that loose clothing can snag during tying, and non-stretchy fabrics like jeans can limit movement—but there's no dress code. You'll see a bit of everything. Fetish or kink clothing (latex, lingerie, etc.) is less common but welcome.

Q: What can I expect from the Thursday beginner class?

The beginner lesson runs from 7–8:30 pm and assumes zero rope experience. The content varies slightly week to week, but it's always fun and informative. Different instructors rotate through, and the vibe is welcoming and low-pressure. No obligation to participate—you're welcome to just watch.

Q: Who goes to rope jams? How many people turn up?

Anywhere from 25 to 50 people, with a 60-person cap via our pre-booking system. Thursdays tend to be a bit busier and attract more newcomers, so if you're looking to meet people, that's your best bet

Q: How much do jams cost and do I have to book in advance?

Tuesday rope jams are £15 per person, and Thursday jams are £18 per person—the Thursdays include an introduction to the space and a class. You'll need to pre-book online here.

Q: I've seen people use memberships, how does that work?

A membership give you a discount on individual jams and 10% discounts on events. In 2026 we introduced a Flexi Membership costing £145 which gives you 12 credits that can be used to book rope jams (1 credit = 1 rope jam for 1 person), or to get 10% off other events/classes/workshops. Grab one from our event shop, then just enter your membership code at checkout when booking your tickets.

Q: Do you also offer longer structured courses?

We do. We offer a full foundation series called "Discover Shibari" comprised of 4 levels or courses. Course 1 assumes zero knowledge and is open to complete beginners, then the courses progress into more complex techniques all the way up to suspension. We also offer short one-off evening classes open to different levels on various techniques, harnesses, topics.

You can find out when our next courses are over here.

Q: Do I need a partner for these classes and workshops?

Yes, unless otherwise specified on the event listing our classes require you to come along with a partner. If you don’t have a partner, you can make friends by joining jams and socials, or joining our Discord. Email us for the link.

Q: Do I need to bring my own ropes?

In general you can, but you don't have to. We've got communal jute rope available for everyone. We also sell high-quality jute ropes at the studio or online at www.shibaristore.com.

For beginner classes, you are usually not expected to bring your own rope and it's perfectly fine to use our community ropes. For more advanced workshops that cover suspension you'll be expected to bring your own set as we cannot promise out communal ropes will be safe for suspension. This will be clearly indicated in the event listing under "what to bring" and "pre-requisites".

Q: What's the best way to get to the studio? Do you have parking?

We're seven minutes from London Bridge by train. The closest station is Queen's Road Peckham—literally a one-minute walk. Just follow the railway arches and look for Arch 113 / Unit 17. For detailed directions, check our home page.

There is parking (some free, some paid), on the adjacent streets near the studio.
